2017 Vancouver International Music Competition Hosts Preliminary Round Event in Nanjing, China

The 2017 Vancouver International Music Competition (VIMC) held one part of its preliminary round events in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China at the Flying Star Art Center on July 29, 2017.  Organized by the Canada International Arts & Music Society, the preliminary round held in China had many participants.  The VIMC received many positive comments and applications from participants.

Celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary, the VIMC aims to promote Canadian classical music worldwide by establishing prizes for performing Canadian classical compositions.  The VIMC is British Columbia’s first large-scale international music competition to feature multi-instrumental categories (piano, strings, and voice).  Eligible string instruments for the event include violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, and guitar.  Age groups for the competition include Artists (ages 18-35), Young Artists (13-17), and Junior Talent (12 and under).  The VIMC preliminary round consists of onsite auditions in Nanjing, China and Vancouver, BC, Canada as well as online video submissions from applicants from around the world.  Exciting venues for the final round of the competition will include the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and Roy Barnett Recital Hall in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Winners in each instrumental category will be awarded a Platinum Prize worth $1,500 as well a performance opportunity and a professional DVD recording.  Artistic Advisors for the VIMC include Tomislav Nedelkovic-Baynov, Keiko Alexander, Daniel Bolshoy, Rosa Hong, and Kathy Nordmeyer.  VIMC Jury Members include Sasha Starcevich, Mark George, Corey Hamm, Andrew Dawes, Lynne A. Turner, Sean Bickerton, Nancy Hermiston, Jocelyn Morlock, and Oswaldo Iraheta.

The VIMC is supported by sponsors including Tom Lee Music, Royal Conservatory of Music, Shiyun Financial group, Vancouver Chinese Culture & Arts Foundation, and other private sponsors.  BC Premier John Horgan, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan, Member of Legislative Assembly Teresa Wat, Member of Parliament Alice Wong, CEO of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Jeff Alexander, and BC director of the CMC Sean Bickerton have sent greeting letters for the event.
