On October 8, 2017, history was made at the gala concert for the inaugural 2017 Vancouver International Music Competition (VIMC) with the conclusion of the first large-scale international music competition in Vancouver and the province of British Columbia. Organized by Canada International Arts & Music Society (CIAMS) in part to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada, the competition featured three age groups and categories for piano, stringed instruments, and voice. The competition accepted almost three hundred applications representing competitors from around the world.
