Born in Shanghai, Ms. Guilian Liu is a celebrated musician and educator. A graduate of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China’s top music institution, she became the youngest professor in the country’s history. She has received numerous national awards and has performed internationally across Asia, Europe, and North America.
Ms. Liu rose to global recognition in the Academy Award-winning documentary From Mao to Mozart (1980), where her pipa performance for violinist Isaac Stern earned high praise. She has also been commended by renowned figures such as Zuqiang Wu, Dehai Liu, Seiji Ozawa, and Herbert von Karajan. Her achievements are recorded in Who’s Who of the World, Chinese Famous Contemporary Writers and Artists, and Chinese Famous Musicians.
In China, Ms. Liu served as Principal of the Plucked Instruments Section in the Central Conservatory’s Chinese Orchestra and as Director of the Shanghai Pipa Society. She was an active member of the Chinese Musicians’ Association and the Chinese National Orchestral Society.
Now based in Vancouver, Canada, she is the Art Director of Pearl Music Studio. Her students have won major local awards, including the Overall Championship at the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival. She has served as a judge at many major competitions, such as the Taipei Pipa Competition, Hong Kong Schools’ Music Festival, and China National Pipa Competition.
Ms. Liu has performed as a soloist with orchestras including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony. In 2008, she led a benefit concert to support victims of the Wenchuan earthquake.
Currently, she continues to perform worldwide with the acclaimed Canadian ensemble Red Chamber, inspiring audiences with her artistry and dedication.
