The 2017 Vancouver International Music Competition (VIMC) Committee held an information session for teachers and interested parties at 1029 Caf\u00e9 in Richmond, BC, Canada on August 3, 2017.\u00a0 Celebrating Canada\u2019s 150th Anniversary, the VIMC aims to promote Canadian classical music worldwide by establishing prizes for performing Canadian classical compositions.\u00a0 Organized by the Canada International Arts & Music Society (CIAMS), the VIMC is British Columbia\u2019s first large-scale international music competition to feature multi-instrumental categories (piano, strings, and voice).\u00a0 Eligible string instruments for the event include violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, and guitar.\u00a0 Age groups for the competition include Artists (ages 18-35), Young Artists (13-17), and Junior Talent (12 and under).<\/p>\n

Lynn Liu, the President of CIAMS and the VIMC, Brad Stark, VIMC vice-president, Oscar Liu, competition coordinator, and Jacob Seyer, VIMC web-designer discussed the background, rules, and prizes for the VIMC along with other committee members.\u00a0 Members of the VIMC committee also gave musical performances.\u00a0 The VIMC preliminary round consists of onsite auditions in Nanjing, China and Vancouver, BC, Canada as well as online video submissions from applicants from around the world.\u00a0 Exciting venues for the final round of the competition will include the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and Roy Barnett Recital Hall in Vancouver, BC, Canada.<\/p>\n

The audience asked several questions to the VIMC committee.\u00a0 Here are a few of the questions that were asked:<\/p>\n
Q<\/strong>: Are competitors allowed to perform repertoire in the final round that they previously played in the preliminary round? <\/p>\n Q<\/strong>: Is it necessary for competitors to perform Canadian repertoire in the competition? <\/p>\n Q<\/strong>: How can international competitors who are not available to play in the onsite preliminary round events participate in the competition? <\/p>\n Winners in each instrumental category will be awarded a Platinum Prize worth $1,500 as well a performance opportunity and a professional DVD recording.\u00a0 Artistic Advisors for the VIMC include Tomislav Nedelkovic-Baynov, Keiko Alexander, Daniel Bolshoy, Rosa Hong, and Kathy Nordmeyer.\u00a0 VIMC Jury Members include Sasha Starcevich, Mark George, Corey Hamm, Andrew Dawes, Lynne A. \nA<\/strong>: \u00a0Yes. \u00a0Competitor can perform the same repertoire in both the preliminary and final rounds.\u00a0 However, keep in mind that we encourage the performance of Canadian works in the final round as there are prizes available to competitors.<\/p>\n
\nA<\/strong>: Canadian repertoire is optional, not mandatory. \u00a0However, we encourage performers to play Canadian works.\u00a0 The competition offers several prizes in the final round for the best performances of Canadian compositions.<\/p>\n
\nA<\/strong>: Our preliminary round accepts online video submissions from competitors from around the world. \u00a0We also allow local competitors to apply with video submissions.\u00a0 Our committee will judge the video submissions in late August and leave adequate time for competitors to prepare visa and plane tickets, etc.<\/p>\n\n
