On October 6-7, 2017, the 2017 Vancouver International Music Competition (VIMC) held its final round at the University of British Columbia (UBC), School of Music in its inaugural year. Organized by Canada International Arts & Music Society (CIAMS) in part to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada, the competition featured three age groups and categories for piano, stringed instruments, and voice. The competition accepted almost three hundred applications representing competitors from around the world.
The final round concerts took place in two recital halls including Roy Barnett Recital Hall and Gessler Hall. Over sixteen hours of music was performed by over one hundred finalists. Friday, October 6, held concerts for piano junior talents and all vocal categories. Saturday featured all strings categories as well as the remaining piano concerts for Young Artists and Artists categories.
The international jury for the VIMC featured renowned musicians for each of three categories. The jury members of the competition included Sasha Starcevich, Mark George, Corey Hamm, Keiko Alexander, Andrew Dawes, Lynne Turner, Sean Bickerton, Rui Shi Zhuo, Nancy Hermiston, and Oswaldo Iraheta.
